Whittamore’s Farm is a large 220 acre fruit and vegetable farm nestled beside the Rouge River Valley in Markham. The farm has been in the Whittamore family since 1804. Market gardening has been in the Whittamore’s family business for many years. From the early 1920’s to the 1950’s, Frank J. Whittamore sold vegetables door to door in the North Toronto (Yonge & St. Clair) area. His son Gilbert bought a 50 acre farm on Steeles Avenue in southeast Markham in 1952 where he grew strawberries and vegetables to be wholesaled at the Toronto Food Terminal as well as local retail markets.
Gilbert and his wife Evelyn established a small pick-your-own strawberry and raspberry operation in the mid 50’s. Over the next 60 years the farm expanded in its variety of crops and today their sons operate one of the largest pick-your-own, farm shop and agritainment farm in Ontario. The farm welcomes close to 300,000 customers annually.
Sadly, 2017 makes the end of an era. The Whittamore Family will offer their customers one final season to enjoy the family farm experience before closing its gates and all farm activities to the public in November 2017. It will be an exciting, fully operational season and there will be no change to their offerings for the families, schools and other customers who visit them.
